How to properly store cannabis?

Cannabis is a drug that is derivate from Indian hemp plants such as cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. The main active chemical in cannabis is THC or delta- 9 tetrahydrocannabinol. Cannabis is also known as grass, pot hash, weed, herb, joint, smoke, hooch and more in a different corner. Cannabis is slowly getting legalized in the maximum part of the world as they are providing people with a number of medical benefits. Namaste is one of the largest licensed cannabis producers in Canada and all their products are regulated to meet quality standards provided by Health Canada.

When it comes to storing the cannabis, the method one chooses makes a great difference on the potency and freshness. Below are some of the main factors which one must consider while storing the cannabis

  • Humidity

Similar to tobacco, marijuana needs to be stored at a specific humidity range. If the humidity level is high, the stuff might grow mold and in the dry surrounding, it will become brittle and result in harsh smoke. Hence, one can get a mason jar or use a humidity control boveda pack as the most cost-effective solution.

  • Material

If you are looking for the wooden humidor, mahogany is ideal since it will absorb the scent of its contents as opposed to imparting it on the herb. They also help keep the smell neutral outside the box. Glass and metal containers are considered the right solution for storage methods.

  • Exposure to light and surrounding

It has been stated that UV light might degrade the THC levels. Hence, one must store their buds in a cool, dark place, away from any light.

In a nutshell, cannabis should be stored in a cool surrounding, temperature between 5°C to 20°C, dry and below 60% humidity environment, out of direct sunlight and also away from the strong smells. Moreover, for the best flavor results, one must keep individual strains separated.

Below are the dos and don’ts one must follow while storing cannabis so that their property will not be deteriorated in the long run

  1. Freeze the buds

Once buds are completely dry and have been stored for at least 4 weeks, one must freeze them to maintain their potency or freshness ratio.  Some of the grower’s double-bag buds in freezer bags and then wrap the bags in foil. If you are planning to store a lot of buds for a long time the freezer could be the best available option. Moreover, make sure you only use the frozen buds once they come under room temperature as there are high chances they might easily break off.

  1. Avoid using them in plastic baggies

Most of the people use plastic bags or containers to store the cannabis but it is one of the worst ways of storing them. It is said that buds might use their smell and tend to dry out or brittle in the plastic baggies. In unlikely events, plastic bags should only be used for short term or should be avoided altogether.

  1. Use foil paper for the short term

Aluminum wrap protects from light, heat, and air and hence they can be used to store the buds for a shorter time period. The buds stored wrapped in foil can last for weeks if kept untouched outside the refrigerator but if manipulated often, the foil can bunch up and poke at trichomes.
